Samsung's newest tagline is "Welcome to Foldables: Everyone's Invited. Some of Us Just Got Here Earlier." Everyone knows who "just got here." It's a good line. It's also the least interesting part of the campaign.
First, what it actually is. It's a three day pop-up, October 9 to 11, at a metro station in Kuala Lumpur, with three rounds a day and a Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra as the prize each round. A regional activation, not a worldwide ad blitz. The internet will say otherwise.
Is the joke fair?
Mostly. Samsung shipped its first foldable in 2019. Apple's first, the iPhone Duo, opens pre-orders October 16 with deliveries from October 23. Showing up earlier is real, and it shows in the details.
I own a Galaxy Z Fold8. It's my second line, next to an iPhone Air I use every day. What the Fold8 taught me, as someone porting iOS apps to Android, is that the hard part of a foldable isn't the hinge. It's that your app has to look right at several shapes and sizes, and sometimes change shape while someone is using it. Samsung has had years to learn that lesson in public. Apple is about to learn it in two weeks, with a lot of people watching.
I think Apple will get a lot right, because it controls the whole stack and apps tend to follow its layout rules. But "apps follow the rules" is not the same as "apps feel good," and the first month of real use is where that gap shows up.
The footnotes are the real strategy
Buried under the slogan are two claims that matter more:
- Quick Share now works with AirDrop. Samsung says it's first on select flagships running One UI 9 or 8.5, and the Galaxy S26 is on the list. I can tell you it works, because I use it a lot. Quick Share talks to iPhones in both directions, Android to iPhone and iPhone to Android. The one catch is that the iPhone has to have AirDrop set to Everyone for 10 minutes, or it won't show up. My most common use is sending screenshots of my Android builds to my Mac. I also use it at work with Android users, and it works just as well there, and just as fast.
- Smart Switch can pull data from an iPhone using a QR code and no cable. Samsung's footnote says iPhone to Galaxy transfers need Android 17 or later, or iOS 26.6 or later.
That's the pitch. Not "we were first," but "moving over is easy, and you won't lose touch with your iPhone friends." And since AirDrop sharing does work in daily use, it removes one of the quiet reasons people stay in one ecosystem. Keep that in mind when you see the next round of foldable ads. The 10 minute Everyone setting is a little clunky, but it's a small price compared to emailing yourself a screenshot.
What I'd tell someone deciding between them
- Want to try a foldable cheaply? Wait for the Duo launch noise to settle. Carrier deals tend to get more aggressive when a new competitor enters.
- Already on iPhone? The Duo is probably your answer. Switching ecosystems is a bigger decision than switching phones.
- Already on Samsung? Don't switch because of an ad. Check whether the S26 and Fold8 patches are installed, and then wait for real Duo reviews.
One more thing: the S26 got its October patch
Samsung started rolling out the October security update to the Galaxy S26 series in the U.S. and Canada. It fixes 62 security issues and is the first update the S26 line has had since One UI 9.0 on Android 17. The unlocked Ultra build is about 531MB. Settings, then Software update, will show if it's reached you.
I'll say the same thing I say every month. Install the patch. Security updates are boring until the week you're glad you did.
Where I land
A slogan lasts a weekend. Layouts that work on a folding screen last years. That's where my attention goes, and it's why I test on both the Fold8 and a Pixel 11 Pro XL instead of one device. Whoever makes the better everyday foldable experience will win this, not the better joke. I covered the rest of Apple's month in my October lineup post.
Verified October 10, 2026. Campaign details are from Samsung Malaysia's newsroom. Patch details are from SamMobile. The Quick Share and AirDrop details come from my own daily use, not from Samsung's page, which only lists select flagships. The studio's app lineup is at jcmobileappstudio.com/apps.
