If you only read one Apple story this week, read the event recap. This post is the other five days: what Apple published after the applause stopped, what reviewers found once they got the Duo in their hands, and the two dates that actually matter this weekend. Where something comes from a single outlet or an analyst rather than Apple, I say so.
The keynote, in one paragraph
Tuesday, September 9. iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on the new 2 nanometer A20 Pro, a variable aperture main camera, and a $100 price bump to $1,199 and $1,299. The first folding iPhone, the Duo, with a 5.4 inch cover screen, a 7.6 inch inner screen, Touch ID in the power button instead of Face ID, and a $1,999 starting price. AirPods 5 at $129 and $149. Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 with a redesigned heart rate sensor. No standard iPhone 18 this fall. The full breakdown with every spec Apple confirmed is in the recap linked above, so I will not repeat it here.
The sleeper story: Siri AI has a daily limit
This is the item I think matters most and got the least airtime. In the fine print Apple published alongside the event, the company confirmed there will be "a daily usage limit" on Siri AI, and that the limit varies "by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors." The same footnote covers the cloud side of Apple Intelligence more broadly: the intelligent photo editing tools (Clean Up, Extend, Spatial Reframing), Image Playground, the AFM 3 Cloud and Cloud Pro models in Shortcuts, and third party apps that call Apple's foundation models through Private Cloud Compute. Once you hit the cap for the day, the feature is locked until it resets. Apple's wording on the way out of that is short: "Increased access to such features will be available for a fee." At WWDC the company said the expanded access would ride on higher iCloud+ tiers. No price and no date yet (Source).
My read: this is the first time Apple has put a meter on a headline iPhone feature, and it tells you exactly where the cost sits. The on-device parts of Apple Intelligence are not listed. The parts that run on Apple's servers are. If you were wondering whether "private cloud" was free to operate, here is your answer, and it is the same answer every other AI company arrived at. I build apps that keep the model on the phone partly so this never becomes my problem or my users' problem, and this week made that choice look less like a philosophy and more like a budget decision.
iOS 27 goes public Monday
Apple seeded the iOS 27 release candidate on Tuesday, build 24A435, alongside release candidates for iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. The public release is scheduled for Monday, September 14. If you are on the developer or public beta you can pull the RC now from Settings, General, Software Update, and it is the build everyone else gets Monday unless something critical turns up over the weekend (Source). Two things to know before you tap install. First, the Duo ships with iOS 27.1, not 27.0, so some of the wide screen layouts Apple demoed are not in Monday's build. Second, the new Siri is the part of iOS 27 that now has a daily cap, see above, so if Siri stops answering on day one it may not be a bug.
Tonight's cutoff and Saturday's 5 a.m. alarm
Preorders for iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12, Ultra 4, and AirPods 5 open Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific, 8 a.m. Eastern, with delivery starting Friday, September 18. The Saturday date is unusual, Apple normally uses the Friday after the event, and the widely reported reason is that Friday is September 11. Apple did the same in 2015 when its event also fell on September 9. Apple's Get Ready tool, which lets you pick your model, color, storage, trade-in, and financing ahead of time so Saturday is one tap, closes tonight, Friday September 11 at 9 p.m. Pacific (Source). If you already know what you want, do the Get Ready step before bed. The point of it is that the first batch of shipping slots goes to people who are not typing a card number at 5:02 a.m.
The watches and AirPods did not wait for Saturday, their preorders opened Tuesday. Mine is in: an Apple Watch Series 12, 46mm natural titanium with the dark bronze Milanese loop, showing an arrival date of Friday, September 18.
The Duo is on its own clock: preorders open Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific and it ships October 23. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that Apple blew through its cost targets on the Duo because of the memory shortage and is absorbing some of the expense to hold the $1,999 line. That is reporting, not an Apple statement, but it fits the pricing.
Trade-in values went both directions
Apple updated its trade-in page the same day as the event. The headline numbers are new ceilings for last year's phones: up to $885 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max, $785 for a 17 Pro, and $585 for an iPhone Air or a plain iPhone 17. The part that got less attention is that older phones dropped: iPhone 16 Pro Max went from $720 to $610, iPhone 16 Pro from $630 to $510, and iPhone 15 Pro Max from $530 to $455, a cut of up to $120. iPad and Mac values went up across the board, with the iPad Pro ceiling moving from $720 to $905 and MacBook Pro from $855 to $1,315 (Source). So "Apple raised trade-in values" is true if you own a 2025 phone and false if you own a 2024 one. I went through the full table and how to check your own device in this post.
What people said after holding the Duo
The hands-on pieces landed Wednesday and Thursday. The Wall Street Journal's Joanna Stern wrote that she sees "no crease whatsoever," even with the phone folded, and called the matte inner display her favorite feature. She described the closed phone as beefier and sturdier than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, and called the missing telephoto lens the biggest hardware disappointment. Apple's own battery claims she cites, up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen and 44 on the outer, are Apple's numbers and nobody has tested them yet (Source). On the Android side, Droid-Life ran a reader reaction roundup that praised the opening animation and Pencil support and knocked the weight and the bezels next to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. I have a Fold 8 and a Pixel 10 Pro Fold on my desk and I will do my own comparison when the Duo arrives in October, not before.
Smaller items
- Amazon opened preorders for AirPods 5 and both new watches on Thursday with small launch discounts, alongside Apple's own channels (Source).
- AppleCare One's family plan now covers up to six people, per MacRumors' event recap.
- MacRumors' recap also reports price increases on the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e, and the iPhone 17 Pro leaving the lineup. I have only seen that from one outlet so far, so treat it as reported rather than confirmed until Apple's store pages settle.
What I am actually doing this weekend
Installing the RC on a spare phone, not my daily one, and watching whether the Siri cap bites in normal use. Skipping the 5 a.m. preorder, because I have an iPhone 17 Pro Max that is nine months old and the $885 trade-in does not change the math on a $1,299 phone for me. And doing the Get Ready step anyway for the Duo in October, because the folding phone is the one I actually want to write about.
Everything here reflects Apple's September 9 keynote, Apple's developer release notes and newsroom posts, and same-week reporting from MacRumors, 9to5Mac, and the Wall Street Journal, linked inline. Single-outlet items are flagged as such. Verified September 11, 2026. If you want apps that keep the AI on the phone and never hit a daily cap, the studio's full lineup is at jcmobileappstudio.com/apps.
