What I'm watching this weekend: Robin Hood gets dark, Austen gets a remake, and Scream comes home

Hugh Jackman's grim Robin Hood lands on HBO Max, a new Sense and Sensibility opens in theaters, and Scream 7 hits Prime Video. What's actually new and what I'm picking.

October is my favorite month to watch things, and this weekend finally has more than I can get through. Here's what's actually new, what I'm picking, and what I'm skipping.

Hugh Jackman as an old, worn down Robin Hood who gets taken in by a healer at a rural nunnery, played by Jodie Comer. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, who made Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One. Bill Skarsgård is Little John. It's A24, it's two hours, and it's bleak on purpose.

A few outlets are calling this a streaming "debut." It isn't. It opened in theaters on June 19 and made about $9.5 million on a $20 million budget, which is why it's on HBO Max four months later. Reviews were split. 68% on Rotten Tomatoes, 61 on Metacritic, and audiences gave it a C+ CinemaScore, which is rough. The common complaint is that it broods more than it moves.

I'm watching it anyway. Jackman doing a grim, tired version of a character he's never played is interesting to me, and Sarnoski's Pig is one of the best quiet movies of the last decade. Go in expecting a slow character piece, not an action movie, and I think it lands. Go in expecting Logan with a bow and you'll be annoyed.

Focus Features opens its new Jane Austen adaptation in the U.S. this weekend, with Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne, directed by Georgia Oakley. It already ran in the U.K. in September and the reviews are stronger than Robin Hood's, 78% on Rotten Tomatoes and a five star notice from The Telegraph. If you want something in a theater that isn't horror the week before Halloween, this is it.

Scream 7 is on Prime Video now. I'll be honest, this is the one I'm most likely to actually finish this weekend. Horror in October is a rule in my house.

Sacrifice on Netflix has Chris Evans as a washed up action star at a charity gala on a Greek island when a cult shows up, with Anya Taylor-Joy. It's a dark comedy thriller, not the serious drama the title suggests.

Netflix also added Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, a documentary, and Money Trap: The Karun Treasure, a new mystery series. Tulsa King season 4 starts on Paramount+ and The Diplomat season 4 dropped all eight episodes on Netflix Thursday.

Friday night, Scream 7. Saturday, Robin Hood, with low expectations and a big blanket. Sunday, the Norm documentary if there's time. Sense and Sensibility is the one I'd pick if I were going to a theater, but that depends on whether the dogs let me leave.

Verified October 16, 2026. Release details, cast, box office and review scores from the films' pages on Wikipedia (and here). This weekend's streaming lineups from Tom's Guide and Forbes. Everything else is my opinion.
