Talewright is a book reader for iPhone, iPhone Duo and iPad, built and published by JC Mobile App Studio LLC.
Frequently asked questions
What is Talewright?
Talewright is a book reader with pages that curl like paper. Browse tens of thousands of free public domain classics, or bring your own EPUB and PDF files. Highlight passages, add notes, look up words, bookmark pages and search inside a book. Talewright Premium adds a reading companion and read aloud. No account and no ads.
How does it work on iPhone Duo and iPad?
Closed, you read one page on the outer screen. Open it and you get a two-page spread with the spine on the fold. Half-fold it like a book and the controls move to each page, clear of the crease. Half-fold it like a laptop and the book stands on the top half while the controls lie on the bottom half. On iPad, you get a two-page spread whenever the window is wide enough, including in Split View and Stage Manager. On other iPhones, Talewright reads one page at a time.
Where do the free books come from?
From Project Gutenberg, a volunteer library of public domain works, and Standard Ebooks, which publishes carefully typeset editions of them. Talewright is not affiliated with either. The books are public domain in the United States. Copyright lasts longer in many other countries, so outside the US Talewright hides books whose author, translator or illustrator died too recently for the book to be free where you are. That's why a book a friend in another country can find may not appear for you, and why Standard Ebooks' new releases show only for US App Store accounts.
Why is Talewright rated 18+?
The free library holds tens of thousands of classics, and many of them deal with adult themes, sex and violence, the way literature always has. The catalog isn't edited for children, so the App Store rating is 18+. Erotica and pornography aren't part of the catalog at all, which is why a few titles you might find on other public domain sites don't appear in Discover. Books you import yourself are never filtered.
Why can't I get Talewright in my country?
Talewright is on the App Store in 140 countries and regions. It isn't available yet in the European Union, mainland China, and a few countries where local rules restrict apps with an 18+ library. We'd like to bring it to the EU later. If you'd like to be told when it arrives where you live, email us.
How much does Talewright cost?
The reader and every free book are free, with no ads. Talewright Premium is an optional subscription at $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year in the U.S., with a 7-day free trial on the yearly plan. Prices in other countries are shown in the app before you buy. Premium adds Story so far recaps, Ask this book, Who's who, read aloud and note export, and works on every book, including your own.
How do I cancel or restore Premium?
Open Settings in Talewright and tap Manage Subscription, or go to your Apple Account settings, Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date and you keep Premium until the period ends. On a new device, tap Restore Purchases in Settings. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do I add my own books?
On the Shelf, tap + and choose Import a book, or open an EPUB or PDF from Files, Mail or Safari and choose Talewright. Books with DRM, such as those bought from Kindle or Apple Books, can't be opened.
How do I change how the page looks?
While reading, tap the middle of the page to show the controls, then tap Aa. Choose from five themes (Paper, Sepia, Dusk, Night and Black), seven fonts, text size, line spacing and margins. Talewright also follows the text size you set in your iPhone's Settings.
Can I turn pages without the curl animation?
Yes. Tap Aa while reading and set Page turns to Slide, and pages move left and right with a swipe instead. Set it back to Curl any time. You can also tap the left or right edge of the page to turn it. PDFs always use the curl.
Is there a night mode or warm light?
Yes. Tap Aa while reading and move the Warm light slider to tint the page amber, which takes out the blue light that can keep you awake. Turn on Only in the evening and it comes on by itself from 8 PM to 7 AM. The Night and Black themes help too.
Why does the book show one page or two?
Talewright shows one page when the screen is upright and a two-page spread when it is wider than it is tall: an iPad in landscape, or an iPhone Duo opened up. To always see one or two pages, tap Aa and change Pages.
Can it read books aloud?
Yes, with Talewright Premium. Tap the headphones button while reading. It uses the voices built into your iPhone or iPad and keeps reading with the screen locked. To get a better voice, download an enhanced voice in your device's Settings, under Accessibility, Spoken Content, Voices.
How do I highlight, take notes or look up a word?
Press and hold a word, drag to select, then choose Highlight, Note or Define. Tap a highlight to change its color, add a note or remove it. Words you look up are saved with their sentence in Settings, Vocabulary. Everything you marked is listed in the book's notebook, the list button while reading.
Why doesn't the reading companion work on my iPhone?
Story so far, Ask this book and Who's who are written on your device by Apple Intelligence, so they need an iPhone that supports it, with Apple Intelligence turned on in Settings, and a book in a language it supports. The first recap of a book takes the longest.
Does Talewright sync across my devices?
Yes, when you are signed in to iCloud. Your library, places, highlights, notes and settings sync through your own private iCloud, not our servers, so you can start a book on your iPhone Duo and finish it on your iPad. If a book is open on one device while you read further on the other, Talewright offers to jump to where you left off. With Handoff turned on, the book also appears on your other device's Dock or app switcher, open at the same page. Free books download again on each device; books you imported sync as files.
A book won't download or open. What can I do?
Check your internet connection and try again. If one book keeps failing, try another edition of it in Discover, since some older files are damaged at the source. For a book you imported, make sure it is an EPUB or PDF without DRM. If it still won't open, email us the book's title and we'll look into it.
Why doesn't my book appear on my other device?
Both devices need to be signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud turned on, and Talewright turned on under Settings, your name, iCloud, Saved to iCloud. Open Talewright on both and give it a minute. Free books download again on each device the first time you open them.
I was reading on one device and the other doesn't show my page.
Talewright saves your place a couple of seconds after each page turn. Open the book on the other device and it starts where you left off. If the book was already open there, Talewright offers to jump to your latest page. Make sure the first device had a connection when you stopped reading.
How do I delete a book?
On the Shelf, press and hold a book and choose Remove from library. Its highlights, notes and bookmarks are removed too, on every device that syncs. You can add a free book back from Discover at any time.
Does Talewright collect my data?
No. There is no account, no analytics and no ads. Your books, highlights and notes stay on your devices and in your own iCloud, and the reading companion runs on your device. The details are in the privacy policy.
Is Talewright available in Spanish?
Yes. Talewright follows your device's language and is fully available in English and Spanish. Discover also lists free books in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and more.
