Frequently asked questions
What is Plantilla?
Plantilla helps U.S. hourly workers read a pay stub, decode a benefits packet, check FMLA eligibility, calculate take-home pay, and look up core workplace rights, all in their own language. There is no account and no sign-up. Reading your documents is done on your phone with Apple Vision. The features that explain what was read, such as Ask Plantilla and the plain-language summaries, use an AI model that runs on a server, and they only turn on after you agree to it. See the two answers below for exactly what is sent.
Which languages does it support?
Ten: English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Filipino, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, Arabic, Polish, and Russian. Plantilla is Spanish first by design, and you can switch language at any time in Settings.
Is Plantilla legal advice?
No. Plantilla provides general, educational information about pay, benefits, and workplace rights. It is not legal advice and is not a substitute for a lawyer or your state labor agency. Laws vary by state and change over time. For your specific situation, consult a qualified professional.
How does the pay stub scanner work?
You photograph or import a pay stub, and Apple Vision reads the text on your device.
The photo itself never leaves your phone.
Plantilla then highlights the fields, flags anomalies, and charts trends over time.
To turn that raw text into a plain-language explanation, Plantilla sends the
text it read, which includes your pay figures, to an
AI model through our server. This only happens after you accept the AI consent screen,
which is off until you accept it and can be switched back off at any time in Settings. With
it off, scanning and the local math still work, the AI explanations do not. The same
applies to W-2s, HR letters, benefits documents, and Ask Plantilla.
Is the document vault private?
The vault keeps a record of each document you track, its label, type, expiry date, and your notes. It does not store the document image itself. That record is saved on your phone, protected by iOS file protection so it cannot be read while the phone is locked, and it is never uploaded to us. It is included in your normal iPhone backup, so if you back up to iCloud it goes along with everything else. Plantilla tracks expirations and sends renewal nudges as local notifications on the device.
What does Plantilla send over the internet?
The full list, so you can decide what you are comfortable with:
- Only after you accept the AI consent screen: the text read from a pay stub, W-2, HR letter, or benefits document, and anything you type into Ask Plantilla, goes to our server and on to the AI model that writes the explanation. It is sent with a random ID for your install, not your name, and no account is involved. Decline or switch it off in Settings and none of this is sent.
- On every launch, with no personal data: Plantilla checks our site for updated state labor law information and for the compliance digest. These requests send nothing about you or your documents.
- When you export a W-4: the blank form is downloaded from irs.gov.
- Purchases: handled by Apple's App Store.
Your document photos, your vault, and your saved pay history are never uploaded. We do not run analytics or ad trackers, and there is nothing to log in to.
What does Pro include?
Plantilla is free to download. The paid upgrade is called
Premium inside the app, and it is a
one-time $9.99 USD purchase, not a subscription, so
there is nothing to renew and nothing to cancel. It unlocks the unlimited document vault,
HR letter translation, Ask Plantilla, dual language, state-law updates, the compliance
digest, and PDF export. Free includes the scanners, the calculators, the FMLA quiz, and the
rights lookup, with a short cooldown between scans.
If you reinstall or move to a new phone, open Settings inside Plantilla and tap
Restore Purchases, signed in with the same Apple
Account that made the purchase. If you subscribed back when Premium was sold monthly or
yearly, that subscription still works and still renews, and you can cancel it in the
Settings app under your name, then
Subscriptions.
How do I request a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple, not the developer. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find the Plantilla charge, and request a refund.
I found a bug or have a feature request.
We would love to hear it. Email [email protected] with the subject line "Feedback" and as much detail as you can share.
Still need help?
If your question is not answered above, write in and a real person will read it. We typically respond within 1 to 2 business days, in English or Español.
