Ehmber Privacy Policy
Ehmber is a notes app for iPhone built around returning, not storing. It is built and published by JC Mobile App Studio LLC.
This policy explains, plainly, what Ehmber does with your data.
Who we are
Ehmber is built and operated by JC Mobile App Studio LLC, a one-person studio based in Pennsylvania, USA ("we", "us"). Contact: [email protected].
Short version
- Ehmber is free. There are no ads, no analytics, no crash-reporting SDKs, and no account.
- Every note is a plain Markdown file stored on your iPhone, in a folder you can open in the Files app.
- Speech is turned into text on your device with Apple's on-device speech recognition whenever your language supports it.
- We operate no servers for Ehmber and receive none of your content.
- If you turn on iCloud sync, your files move to your own iCloud Drive. Apple stores them under its privacy terms. We cannot read them.
- Calendar and Contacts access is optional and read-only, and nothing read from them leaves your device.
- We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
Where your notes live
Each note is a Markdown file with a small header (when it was captured, when it should come back, who it is about). With sync off, the files are in Ehmber's Documents folder on your iPhone, visible under On My iPhone › Ehmber in the Files app. Deleting the app deletes that folder. Ehmber never deletes a note on its own; released notes move to an Archive folder, and only you can delete one permanently.
Speech
When you hold the ehmber, Ehmber records from the microphone only while your finger is down, and turns the audio into text on your device using Apple's SpeechAnalyzer. Audio is not stored and is not sent to us. If your language is not available on-device, Ehmber falls back to Apple's speech recognition service, which may send audio to Apple under Apple's privacy policy. iOS tells you which is in use through its own permission prompts.
Ehmber may ask you one spoken question after a capture and listen briefly for your answer. That answer is handled the same way. The question itself is spoken with Apple's text-to-speech voices on your device.
Returns, calendar, and contacts
A note can come back on a date, or the morning you meet the person it is about. For the second kind, Ehmber reads your calendar for upcoming events and their attendee names. It never creates, edits, or deletes events. If you allow Contacts, Ehmber reads given names only, to recognise who a note is for. Both permissions are optional, and everything read stays on the device. Returns are delivered as local notifications scheduled on your iPhone; no push server is involved.
iCloud sync
iCloud sync is off until you turn it on in Settings. When on, your Notes and Archive folders move into Ehmber's container in your own iCloud Drive and appear under iCloud Drive › Ehmber in the Files app on your devices. Apple syncs and stores the files under its privacy terms; we have no access to your iCloud. Turning sync off moves the files back to your iPhone. Restore from iCloud pulls the files in your iCloud Drive onto the current device.
The widget
The home-screen and Lock Screen widget shows your warmest notes. Ehmber writes a small snapshot of those titles into a storage area shared between the app and the widget on your device. It is not sent anywhere.
What Ehmber learns
To ask less over time, Ehmber keeps a short record of which kind of answer you give to its question (keep, a date, a person, an event) for each kind of phrasing. That record is a small file on your device. It contains no note text.
Links to other apps
Settings lists other apps from the studio and links to the App Store, our website, and our email. Tapping them opens those services, which operate under their own policies. Ehmber contains no advertising SDK and no tracking.
Children
Ehmber is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it, and material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
